Our Team


GMT Exploration Company LLC is managed by a Board of Managers (“Board”), which performs substantially the same functions as a board of directors of a corporation. Thomas E. Claugus and Tim Baer serve as the members of GMT’s Board. The day-to-day management and operations of GMT’s business are performed by or under the supervision of certain executive officers, who serve at the power and direction of the Board and perform substantially the same functions as the executive officers of a corporation.

Thomas E. Claugus

Thomas E. Claugus has served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors since GMT Energy was formed in early 1991. Mr. Claugus resigned his positions with GMT Energy effective with the merger and has since served as a member of the Board and the Chief Executive of GMT Exploration. Mr. Claugus graduated with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree, summa cum laude, from Ohio State University in 1973. Upon graduation, he joined Rohm and Haas Company (‘Rohm and Haas’) as a process engineer. In 1975, Mr. Claugus entered Harvard Business School and graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree, with high distinction, in 1977. Upon graduating from Harvard in 1977, Mr. Claugus returned to Rohm and Haas as a production manager of a manufacturing facility in Mexico. Over the next eight years he held positions of increasing responsibility with Rohm and Haas in Mexico, culminating in his appointment as General Manager of Rohm and Haas for Mexico. During the period from 1985 to mid-1989, Mr. Claugus was the business manager for the Construction Products business and then the Trade Sales business (about $180 million in sales) for Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From June 1989 to November 1990, Mr. Claugus was the manager for Europe of the Polymers Division of Rohm and Haas, based in London, England. This position included all polymer business (approximately $200 million in sales) conducted by Rohm and Haas in Africa and Eastern and Western Europe. In November 1990, Mr. Claugus left Rohm and Haas to engage in private investment activities. Mr. Claugus is presently a principal of GMT Capital Corp., a private investment management company with approximately $5 billion of assets under management.

Tim Baer

PRESIDENT

Tim Baer has served as President of GMT Exploration since June 1, 2026. He brings more than 30 years of upstream oil and gas experience, with a track record of leading technical teams and delivering disciplined, efficient development across major North American resource plays. Prior to joining GMT, Mr. Baer served as Vice President of Engineering at Caerus Oil and Gas, where he oversaw drilling, completions, production engineering, and asset development. In that role, he directed development planning for newly acquired assets, advanced completion optimization initiatives, strengthened cost management practices, and consistently delivered wells below budget while supporting strong production growth. Earlier in his career, Mr. Baer spent nearly two decades with Encana Oil & Gas, holding a variety of senior leadership positions across production, facilities, regulatory, development, and reserves. He played a key role in the management and development of large-scale assets including the Eagle Ford, San Juan, Piceance, Jonah, Wind River, and Uinta basins, with responsibility for substantial production volumes and capital programs. Mr. Baer is recognized for his broad technical expertise, operational leadership, and ability to build high-performing teams while maintaining a focus on capital efficiency, safety, and long-term asset value. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.

Brad Marvin, CFA

CFO

Brad joined GMT Exploration as CFO in September 2024. Prior to GMT, Brad was VP of Finance for Black Knight Energy LLC, a Kayne Anderson Portfolio Company. Prior experience includes serving as VP Business Development for Whiting Petroleum, a publicly-traded Bakken-focused E&P and FourPoint Energy, a privately-held E&P backed by Quantum Energy Partners and GSO.  Brad started his oil and gas career in investment banking with Petrie Parkman & Co., was a VP in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Energy Investment Banking group and eventually Partner with Petrie Partners, LLC.  Brad began his professional career as a Field Artillery officer in the 25th Infantry Division attaining the rank of Captain.  A graduate of the US Army Ranger School, Brad’s military service includes troop leadership in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2005. Brad earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, an MBA from Georgetown University and is a CFA Charterholder.

Randy Frederick

VP OF OPERATIONS

Randy Frederick joined GMT Exploration as Vice President of Operations in February 2026. Prior to GMT, he served as U.S. Operations Manager at Vermilion Energy for nine years, where he led construction, drilling, completions, facilities, and production engineering activities in the Powder River Basin. Earlier in his career, Randy spent 11 years at Encana Oil & Gas, holding engineering and leadership roles across completions, production engineering, operations, and asset development. During this time, he worked in multiple basins, including the Piceance, Haynesville, Eagle Ford, and Permian. He began his career with nearly 10 years at Schlumberger in operational and technical roles, building a strong foundation that complements his more than 30 years of industry experience. Randy holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California State University, Fresno.

Mike Dilli

VP OF GEOSCIENCE

Mike Dilli, VP of Geoscience

Mike Dilli joined GMT Exploration as the Vice President of Geoscience in January 2008. Mr. Dilli has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas business and has extensive experience in geologic analysis, from new ventures exploration to exploitation in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Mr. Dilli worked for Santa Fe Energy for 20 years as a New Ventures and Exploration Geologist throughout numerous USA Basins and Internationally. He was the Exploration Manager for Western Gas Resources in Denver, prior to joining GMT Exploration. Mr. Dilli is a graduate of Fort Lewis College with a BS in Geology. He is a member of both the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologist (RMAG), and the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG).

Hans Schuster

VP OF LAND

Hans Schuster

Hans Schuster joined GMT Exploration Company in December 2014 and was appointed Vice President of Land in January 2026. Prior to assuming his current role, Hans served as Senior Landman, DJ Basin Land Manager, and Land Manager for GMT, supporting the company’s exploration, development, and business development activities. Hans has nearly 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry with expertise in land management, contract negotiations, acquisitions and divestitures, regulatory affairs, stakeholder relations, infrastructure development, and asset commercialization. Throughout his career, he has supported exploration and development projects across the Rocky Mountain and Permian Basin regions and has been involved in the negotiation and management of complex mineral, surface, midstream, and commercial agreements. Hans earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Professional Land and Resource Management from Western Colorado University.

Tom Loveland

DIRECTOR RESERVOIR ENGINEERING

Tom joined GMT in October 2025.  For the previous 10 years, Tom served as Vice President of Reservoir Engineering for Peak Powder River Resources, LLC, performing all reservoir engineering for their Powder River, Wyoming assets.  Other reservoir engineering experience includes 2 years working the Green River and San Juan Basins with Samson Resources Corporation, 7 years with EnCana Oil and Gas USA working the Barnett Shale and Piceance Basin, and more than 6 years with Burlington Resources in the San Juan Basin.  Tom’s industry experience also includes 1 year as a completion engineer and 2 years as a production operations engineer.  Tom brings the same disciplined focus and organizational skills to all jobs, having graduated as valedictorian from Montana Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.
